Intracoronary brachytherapy for the prevention and management of restenosis.

چکیده

Patients who undergo percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) for coronary artery disease are at risk for recurrence at the site of the procedure. Placement of stents as an adjunct to PTCA is one strategy to reduce recurrence. The use of various techniques to apply intracoronary radiation through local application of catheters or placement of radioactive stents (also known as intracoronary brachytherapy) may reduce the rate of restenosis and improve overall health outcomes.

Overview of Intracoronary Brachytherapy for in-Stent Restenosis of a Drug-Eluting Stent

Percutaneous coronary intervention with stenting is considered recently as the most common procedure for the treatment of symptomatic coronary. The article reviewed 41 studies published during 1997-2019 on intracoronary brachytherapy for in-stent restenosis of a drug-eluting stent. Intracoronary radiation therapy was finally confirmed in the setting of in-stent restenosis using as adjunctive th...

Modeling and dose calculations of a pure beta emitting 32P coated stent for intracoronary brachytherapy by Monte Carlo code

Background: Recently, different investigators have studied the possibility of radiation therapy in restenosis prevention and have shown promising results. In this study a unique radioactive source for intra vascular brachytherapy (IVBT) was investigated. The two-dimensional dose distribution in water for a 32P IVBT stent has been calculated. The pure beta emitter source 32P has been co...

Intracoronary brachytherapy in the porcine model: a different animal.

Since the introduction of percutaneous coronary balloon angioplasty, restenosis has remained the most challenging problem facing interventional cardiologists. Stenting has reduced the need for clinically driven repeat revascularization, but has far from eliminated it. As early as 1989, intravascular brachytherapy was proposed as a means to ameliorate the proliferative component of restenosis af...

Intracoronary brachytherapy for the treatment of complex in-stent restenosis.

T he development of an effective strategy for management of in-stent restenosis (ISRS) following ‘‘bare metal’’ stenting has proved difficult. Standard percutaneous therapy for ISRS leads to re-restenosis rates above 50% and consequently represents a poor treatment option. At present the ‘‘gold standard’’ treatment for ISRS is vascular brachytherapy (VBT), with re-restenosis rates falling to be...

Brachytherapy: here today, gone tomorrow?

B y the late 1990s intracoronary brachytherapy had become the gold standard therapy for the treatment of in-stent restenosis (ISR) in bare metal stents. Despite this, the ‘‘uptake’’ of this treatment by the interventional community worldwide, and certainly in the UK, was low. In 2005, drug eluting stents (DES) have entered the interventional armamentarium. The potential for DES to lower the pri...
